Hedda Gabler / 2015

The production opens under an epigraph from Terry Eagleton’s The Meaning of Life, on tragedy as the art form most willing to face the question of life’s meaning without flinching from its darkest answers.

In an interview for the production’s program, director Anja Suša described Hedda as starved of love in a world where no one really loves anyone else — everyone needs each other only to justify themselves. She wanted the production to speak both to Hedda as a woman in today’s world, and to the play’s own history as a shocking work turned, over a century of repertory theatre, into a safe box-office hit.

Directed by Anja Suša, the production premiered at Aarhus Teater in Denmark in January 2015.
