The Pillowman / Jastučko / 2004

Text by Martin McDonagh

Martin McDonagh’s play interrogates Katurian, a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state, after several children in his town are murdered in ways that mirror the gruesome stories he writes. As the interrogation digs into his childhood and his brother’s, the play keeps circling one uneasy question: what a storyteller owes the world for the stories he tells, and whether fiction can really be blamed for what happens after it’s told.Directed by Anja Suša, the production premiered at the Belgrade Drama Theatre in 2004.
