The Miracle in Sargan / Čudo u Šarganu / 2013

Ljubomir Simović’s play unfolds in a rundown tavern called Šargan on the edge of Belgrade, among a handful of regulars whose lives have narrowed down to that one room — held together by grievance, tenderness and the occasional flash of something like grace.

First staged in 1974, it’s widely considered one of the key works of modern Serbian drama, less interested in explaining what a miracle is than in watching people wait for one anyway.

Directed by Iva Milošević, this production premiered at the National Theatre Užice on March 21, 2013, and won awards for best set design and best costume design at the Joakim Vujić Festival in Lazarevac that year.
