Text by Milena Marković
Written on commission for the Yugoslav Drama Theatre, Zmajeubice (Dragon Slayers) is Milena Marković’s “heroic cabaret” take on the Sarajevo assassination — Gavrilo Princip and the Young Bosnia conspirators seen through feverish, poetic language rather than history-textbook distance.
It isn’t really a history play. Marković uses the assassins’ story to ask what it costs a powerless, ordinary young person to insist on being free, and what that demand for freedom still means today.
Directed by Iva Milošević, the production premiered at the Yugoslav Drama Theatre in Belgrade in 2014.
