Text by Friedrich Dürrenmatt
Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s tragicomedy follows Claire Zachanassian, now the richest woman in the world, back to the impoverished town she left decades earlier — with an offer that will save it, on one condition: the town must kill the man who once betrayed her.
What starts as horror slides, almost politely, into consensus — Dürrenmatt’s real subject is how quickly a community’s principles bend once the price gets high enough.
Directed by Mick Gordon, then Artistic Director of Aarhus Teater, the production premiered in Aarhus, Denmark, in September 2014.
